Hoya megalaster

09/01/2014

Hoya megalaster Warb. ex K. Schum. & Lauterb. 1905 is an impressive waxflower vine species, native to Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia. The large, wine-red flowers are grouprd in umbels of up to about 12 single flowers and last for about one week. The fragrant flowers, with a scent reminecent of vanilla get a size of about 3-5 cm in diameter. Hoya megalaster requires warm temperatures all year round, a high humidity and a lot of light, but no direct sun. During growth and flowering season the tropical climber demands a lot of water and should be fertilized regularly.

The large sized waxflower vine will not tolerate waterlogging and whilst in bloom, Hoya megalaster should not be moved or rotated, as the tropical plant will drop its flowers and flower buds. The dark-green leaves of this Hoya species are also very attractive, but with lengths of up to 20 cm quite big.
